In a built environment such as Singapore’s, concrete is such an everyday material that it can be considered to be unremarkable. We sought to work with cement to find an unconventional method of manipulating it such that the perspective that cement, and by extension, concrete, are monotonous would be challenged.
After a series of experiments, we arrived at the method of piping, which is typically used to decorate baked goods, to manipulate the cement.
Cementics is a series of receptacles that disputes the conventional semantics of cement and concrete through qualities brought about by the piping technique. Through piping, the cement is given decorative textural properties that exhibit a visual softness that is usually associated with piped icing. Cement thus adopts a new character, liberating it from its usual imposing and industrial form.
